Because I pen a regular column for Home Theater Magazine, I thing you’ll agree that it was essential that I be able to write intelligently about Blu-Ray. And I’m certain you’ll find no fault with me for taking the most sensible, economical approach by picking up the highly regarded Play Station 3, which offers excellent Blu-Ray playback. Furthermore, I feel confident that you’ll agree that I had to procure a game or two just to test the system’s core strengths. And seeing as you’re a reasonable person, I know you won’t find fault with me for spending a number of hours putting Resistance: Fall of Man through its paces, as well as Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Assassin’s Creed and just recently, and with a great deal of entirely warranted shame, Pain.
Pain is every bit as subtle as its title would suggest. For those familiar with the transcendentally addictive pub game Monkey Bash, I assure you, Pain more than ably picks up the mantle. The story is this: there’s a guy. You with me so far? And you shoot him out of a catapult, all right? And he crashes into things. Um, what else can I tell you about it…? Oh, if you’re skilled at manipulating him you can make him punch a mime. Or grab onto a monkey and throw him into an exploding mailbox. And, um, fly through the air backwards while flatulating.
Look, you just don’t understand Pain, so stop passing judgment on me, okay?

This is what you get when you put Forrest Gump in charge of game development, and he gets ideas by watching his “non-slow” kid throw action figures around the room.

Beware: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare caused the death of my Playstation 3 over Thanksgiving weekend.
I offered my brother-in-law a chance to see what the game is like, and upon starting up the machine, it blew up the Playstation 3’s power source. I’m in the process of haggling with Sony’s “Customer Service Department” (which I have come to know fondly as Sony’s “Automated Recording Bereft of Any Traces of Actual Human Beings Who Would Be Able to Offer Me Help”).
In the meantime, you’ll be happy to know that a Playstation 3, when broken and inoperable, acts as a very large, unwieldy, and exorbitantly-priced paperweight.

Hmm, I think you meant to say that your brother-in-law caused the death of your PS3. What, were you raised to blame inanimate objects? Inanimate objects cannot buy you a new PS3, not even by court order.

Sadly I too have fallen prey to the mind-numbing game Pain when I’m not playing Rock Band.
I think it’s the mime tossing that really has me hooked.

OMG, I now *need* this game ‘Monkey Bash’. Thanks so much for the review!

Since when is it legal to play “Monkey Bash” in pubs? I tried that once after about eight pints of Arrogant Bastard, and now I’m not allowed to live within fifty yards of schools and parks.

This isn’t the first time Mike plugged the Sony Playstation… at least he mentioned some very good games…. last time I think it was NHL ‘96.
I am also addicted to PAIN…. monkey bash is great but the mime throw… impossible I say!

WTH?!? You went with Sony just because of Blu-ray? Do you even know there’s an XBox 360 out there? Just get a seperate BR player, for gawd’s sake! Geez. I know MST3K and Film Crew and Rifftrax are keepin’ you paid, but should you be WASTING money? PAIN is just a meth-addled Stuntman rip-off. Dang, Mike. WAY more licenses on the 360.

P.S. Looks like you’ll be pickin’ up some Michelob, eh?

Which would you rather have, a regular ol’ blu-ray player, or one that could also run games? I think that was the point, not that you should choose PS3 over the other consoles.

If I had to sell my soul to Sony’s pet format, I’d just buy a PS3, too.

Hmmm, I’d like to quote the great bard … PAIN don’t hurt!
