As the poster of Tom Cruise in “The Firm” clearly signals, I am having trouble playing Divx files with my PS3 even though the shiny new 2.1 firmware claims to have Divx support. Tom Cruise in “The Firm” begs any of you out there with knowledge of the subject to clue me in, because you see, with a device like this and working Divx firmware support, a fellow could play all sorts of RiffTrax video on demand. (Including an upcoming holiday chestnut that must be seen to be believed.)
Sadly, as much as this looks like a shameless plug, it really is just me and Tom Cruise in “The Firm” trolling for help getting Divx files to play on my PS3. Won’t you?

I wish I could help you, however I have no PS3. But I can’t pass up a chance to say hello to the Mike Nelson.
Hello.

According to this, “files that are copyright-protected…are not supported.” I’m guessing that includes the encrypted, DRM-locked Rifftrax-on-Demand files.

Mike, I think your problem may be the presence of free radicals. I don’t know why, don’t really know what the hell free radicals are except pertaining to Tom Hayden or Bobby Seale, but I still firmly believe that they’re responsible.
By the way, you are gonna protect the firm, right?

I don’t own a PS3 however I am very knowledged of computers. The comment Steve-O made is most likely the problem you are having. DMR or Digital Right’s Management helps protect copyrighted material from being distributed freely. To be honest it’s so touchy that once while visiting AOL, I found a free movie I wanted to watch, downloaded their software plugin, waited for the movie to finnish downloading so I could watch it, just to have it say I couldn’t. Needless to say I had to go through the process two more times before it let me watch it and the worst part of all was, it wasn’t as good as I remembered it to be. DMR is great and all but like in most ppl’s cases it just gets in the way. It’s like wrapping yourself in plastic wrap just to keep from getting wet when it’s raining outside. I will say this if it’s not the DMR it may be the driver’s are not compatible with the version of divx the movie or whatever was made with. You may want to check into that a little more I would suggest going to sony’s sight and to the divx sight and looking in there forum’s. You may find that your not the only one with this problem. Hope the above helped you made you laugh or something if not sorry. Oh and take care not to break your ps3 outta anger those things aren’t cheap.

DMR? Department of Marine Resources? Well that’s an odd thing to talk about with regard to the PS3.

Wishing you and Tom Cruise in “The Firm” best of luck.
Just don’t mention psychiatry to Tom Cruise in “The Firm,” or Tom Cruise in “The Firm” will read you the riot act.
Outside of that, I hear Tom Cruise in “The Firm” is a really nice guy.

Tom Cruise from “The Firm” and I thank you all. We (Tom Cruise from “The Firm” and I) were trying to view a non-DRM protected file, so it’s not that. I will call Bob Sony, who is sitting in his office at the Sony building and who, I’m told, loves rolling up his sleeves and helping customers with just this type of thing.

Actually Bob Sony is sitting in his office in India awating your call now. Good luck with that Mike.
Seriously though apparently the update does not support Xvid very well which most Divx files that you down load usually are.

Apparently another option is to load linux onto the ps3 and play the Xvid files that way….Hope that helps!!

If you haven’t already done so, might I suggest opening a thread over on the forum concerning this? There are folks there who maintain a frightening level of tech savvy, and who would eagerly help The RiffMaster Himself. (Remember, after all, just who your audience is… there’s a reason we tend to congregate at sci-fi conventions.)

Luckily the Church of Scientology has vitamins for just such an occasion. Just take two, praise the dark lord Xenu, and your wishes come true.
I feel I’ve said too much. The white van is pulling up to my office to take me away right now. I’ll be hiding in the janitorial closet if you need me.

I know I shouldn’t be enabling anyone to watch a Grisham movie but - one thing that could be the issue - apparently, the PS3 is very particular about the folders that it wants files put in. So, to watch a movie, you need a folder on the media called, imaginatively enough, ‘video.’ Dropping the file in it should maybe possibly get it to play. Or not.

My shorter than average computer patience has been taxed for now. I will consult with Bob Sony, maybe have lunch with Jerry Divx, or call his Assistant Director of Question Answering, Barb Codec.
I’ll let you know, and I thank you all for your help, as does Tom Cruise in “The Firm”.

Mike, you may want to take a look at this. I was going to say a few words about it, since gaming is my specialty, but the PS3 makes my brain hurt and I’ll just leave you to determine whether or not the post is useful.

I’m just curious as to when DiVx (dIVX?) stopped being the now obsolete competor of DVD and started being a codec for files on the interwebs.
(DIVx? dIVx? DIvX? diVX? divX? Did I get it right yet?)

Mike, I would recommend leaving the PS3 in the corner, and bringing it out only for the game catalog. (At least for a few years, yet.) The system that will help in this endeavor the most is the Xbox1, with its main advantages being its age and its mod-ability. Even a Soft-Modded Xbox 1 can use Xbox Media Center to play generally anything. You can use a patch cable to FTP into the system, and you can even upgrade the HDD to allow for as much space as you can afford. Check www.xbox-scene.com for information beyond what could be useful.
