I promised BUNNIES, ladies and gentlemen… and now I deliver a whole lot of bunny for one blog post.
Allow me to introduce Herman, a giant rabbit:
The picture above isn’t photoshopped — Snopes.com confirms that. I suspect it was shot from an angle that makes Herman look his biggest, but the picture itself was not altered. That’s a huge bunny.
And for the bunniphobic amongst us, fear not — the Night of the Lepus has not finally commenced. General Woundwort has not returned to enslave you. Herman is apparently a very gentle guy, more docile then a lot of his smaller cohorts.
So it seems you can breed giant rabbits if you have the gumption, plus several thousand pounds of lettuce and carrots to spare at all times.
Some more gargantuan bunnies can be found by clicking the thumbnails below. The information about their actual size is inconsistent, but they seem to weigh well over twenty pounds, stand around three feet tall, and are generally the size of a large cocker spaniel. (So… about what Bugs Buggy would be if he was a real lapin. Trippy, eh?)
There’s also a weird side story about one of the giant rabbit breeders below, a retired German truck driver (the fellow in the baseball hat, pictured with his prize bunny “Robert”), who might be selling his uber-bunnies to North Korea for food. I didn’t pursue that tangent, because I had all I could handle just believing these pictures were real.
In any case, I pity the fox * that tries to mess with these guys:
(* or tiny North Korean dictator)

Hey Bill:
How appropriate! Night of the Lepus will be on tonight on Turner Classic Movies at 2:15 a.m. EST! No, I won’t be up that late watching it… I’m gonna program my VCR to tape it!
I’m not sure if that made me sound better or worse then before!

I have two rabbits of my own, and if I taped them together they wouldn’t be that big. They would, however, be much funnier than a single large rabbit.

I fear a giant DeForest Kelly attacking me and my town. Don’t think they made a horror flick for that one just yet.
My best friend in high school had a rabbit named Cadbury. When Cadbury stood up next to you, on his hinds, he stood up to my hip. That scared the ever-living shit out of me. This is far worse. I fear animals. I am scared that one day my cat Mona will one day learn that she could have me destroyed. All animals are the same. *shiver*

I question the logic of breeding a gigantic rabbit and then naming him ‘Robert’. Why not Megalothumper or Thunderbunny?

The North Koreans had a bunch of giant rabbits shipped over for non-gustatory reasons, but the original owner has big suspicions that the NK’s might be eating his rabbits.

What does it mean that Der Spiegel has a section called Zeitgeist? Isn’t that redundant?

Nice! Put some armor on them and we have BATTLE BUNNIES! The Persians totally would have beaten those 300 way easier if they had battle bunnies instead of a lame battle rhino.

I’m not sure about the guy on the end, but the others in the Zok hats breed these rabbits for human consumption. I think they’re based in Australia…

There’s little doubt that rabbits are evil. Just look at their unholy alliance with the Teletubbies.
These big ones are something else though. Obviously El-ahrairah did something to please Frith to allow these gargantuan bunnies to roam the earth. Lets just thank our lucky stars that they aren’t free roaming yet. Imagine the carnage a good sized herd of these things could cause?

Well Thlayli was rather large. Who’s to say he hasn’t just bred with other big rabbits and produced one of these things? And if he can make one, why not 3000 (hardly a big step, considering that rabbits breed like…themselves)? That could mean lots o’ giant rabbits tearing up the English countryside.

Here is a poem inspired by an offhand remark from a MySpace friend. Enjoy!
Robot-Eating Bunnies
Half a foot! Half a foot!
A lucky foot still!
Press forward on, in for the kill!
March of the Hares, Bunny-troop pairs,
Rally forth, sally forth,
Clash upon, crash upon charging Robot hordes
Swinging their singing mechanical swords!
Wave after wave the Robots did send,
Rabbits of Righteousness set to defend
Bunny teeth gnash, Bunny teeth rend,
Bash ’em all, smash ’em all,
Their gears shall not mend!
Shear anodized steel with Bunny tooth zeal,
Gobble their wires and vulcanized tires,
Hell’s fiery furnace the Robots shall feel!
Down, down went the Robot Armada,
The mechanical tyrannical intifada,
Chomped, stomped, chewed screw by screw,
No match for unstoppable Bunny can-do!
Randy

oh night of the lepus is great! from the packs of bunnies on miniature sets that must be on a cardtable because it shakes whenever they move to the “deadly rabbit paw” that is clearly a glove. oh, and lets not forget the overacting! …it is beautiful in its badness…
