We Are The World

March 19th, 2008 by Conor Lastowka · 29 Comments

A year or two ago, I made a video where I re-enacted Game 6 of the 1986 World Series using characters from the classic Nintendo game RBI Baseball. The Japanese, of course have taken this to the next logical level and commissioned a team of extremely talented…singers? Impersonators? Nut cases? To re-enact the iconic performance of “We Are The World.” Down to the barest detail, like Cyndi Lauper’s fidgeting or Bruce’s looking like he is sitting down on the toilet for the first time in five days, these guys nail it. And if they look as comical as the pudgy Stevie Wonder “look alike” while doing it, all the better.

**UPDATE BY MIKE**

To pick out the impersonators in the above video is child’s play. To name all the celebrities in this video, Voices That Care, is a challenge. And so I challenge you. I’ll even give you some hints: Yes, that is Michael Bolton, Celine Dion, and Will Smith. And no points for recognizing Nelson – I want both Christian names as well.

**UPDATE BY BILL**

The Swiss are not neutral in this matter.

I know most of you could have easily identified the guys from Snotty Cheekbones and the Escalator Haters — and of course, we all know dear Guttural Walt from Brutal God. But without the captions, who else would you get? *

(* Be honest, now. You don’t cross the Swiss. They will hide your stolen family gold in their banks just as soon as look at you, man.)

The real question is, if they did a cheesy “we care” song for the current war, who would be in it?

  • 13 Raistlan on Mar 19, 2008 at 12:20 pm

I thought that was Kevin Murphy smugly grinning at me near the end.

Also, the last singer, was that a really pudgy Elton John?

i replayed it so many times that my browser crashed. i was so desperate to find a face that wasn’t named yet.
I’d like to think there is a situation where you wouldn’t be able to spot Gary Busey in a crowd, this was clearly not it.

  • 24 Clint on Mar 19, 2008 at 9:36 pm

    Let’s see, Voices that Care…

    Chevy Chase
    David Robinson?
    Henry Winkler

I promise to never feel nostalgia for the 90s again after seeing that video.

Only thing missing is Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeny.

Bill, that video was awesome. All such videos need much beer in plastic cups. Holy Hell, they had energy. :)

Is it in his contract somewhere that his voice MUST be double-tracked on everything he records for the rest of his life?

  • 27 Kenny8 on Mar 20, 2008 at 7:25 pm

Dennis Miller and perhaps ex Australian Prime Minister, John Howard

  • 28 Kenny8 on Mar 20, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Mickey Dolenz was there, and I think I saw Gladys Knight and A Pip.

Who on earth is that bald guy at the end with the specs who wows the assembled celebs?

  • 29 Louis Fowler on Mar 21, 2008 at 9:56 am

How about the REAL voices that care–German voices!!! It’s Band fur Afrika, with Nackt im Wind! Enjoy!
