National High Five Day - 4/17

April 16th, 2008 by Conor Lastowka · 16 Comments

The rumors are true! The seventh annual National High Five Day is on Thursday! You may have seen National High Five Day, (which I co-founded back in 2002), mentioned on the Tony Danza Show last year, but if not, the basic idea is that on the Third Thursday in April, while going about your day to day life, you give someone, anyone, a high five. This is how we put it initially:

Imagine that while on your way to class, you pass a dignified looking middle-aged man in a suit. You, of course, are wearing the same underwear as yesterday, a pair of pants off your floor, and a T-shirt with something ironic printed on it. Instead of noticing this respectable pillar of society fifteen seconds or so before your interaction is fated to occur, and lowering your head to avoid his disapproving scowl, you take another course of action. You confidently walk forward, and at the moment of passing, you and the businessman simultaneously raise your hands and wordlessly high-five. The sound of the perfect high five resonates, causing those nearby to silently and enviously take notice. You both walk on, and likely relate the story to whomever you eat dinner with that night. There is no reason why this should not happen with alarming frequency.

National High Five Day’s have been some of the greatest days of the year for the past six years of my life, a time for me to touch the sweaty palms of old friends and strangers alike. I hope you will join my in high fiving it up come Thursday.

Below is video evidence of how awesome National High Five Day can be:

A documentary we made during the second annual NH5D

Documentary we made to commemorate the fifth annual NH5D

A video of intense High Fives

Middle schoolers celebrate NH5D to the music of the Hold Steady

The last one confirms my belief that despite all evidence to the contrary, the youth of America is doing just fine. Happy National High Five Day everyone!

Assuming there was someone (other than Tony Danza) who saw a segment of his television show, would they be bold enough to step out and admit it?

And this also marks that day that people get psyched out of a high five more than any other day ever.

I fully endorse any and all national holidays that involve breaking social norms and getting inside someone’s personal bubble. Happy NH5D, everyone!

I am impressed that they could get a cat to high five. The last time I tried that with my cat, I got scratched.

In my local paper, there was an amazing photo on National High Five Day of a grade schooler high-fiving a life-sized cardboard cutout of the Pope. It was the best thing I’d seen in a long time.

Shame I can’t find the picture online to prove it.

If you were creating a holiday to high-five that it’s my birthday… you were off by just one day.

Or was it that you were high-fiveing because my birthday is the next day? ;)

I heard a ‘national high five day’ comment on a highlight , wish I would’ve been paying closer attention. It was on one of the Minnesota evening news clips or Sportscenter, can’t remember which. Now that I see no one else mentioned it on the blog, I feel really bad for forgetting the details, but you’ll just have to take my word for it. Next year I’ll try to keep a better memory.
