What Bob Hath Wrought

May 14th, 2008 by Kevin Murphy · 12 Comments

According to the Associated Press, this month, forty-three years ago, Bob Dylan and company released what was, arguably, the first music video: D.A. Pennebaker’s storied London Savoy alleyway sixteen millimeter playback portrait of Bob droppin’ the cards. Of course that’s Allen Ginsberg back there, seemingly wearing a tallit.

And true to our spirit here at Rifftrax, the only fitting salute to this legendary film is to include this palindromic parody by another legend, and guest Riffer, Weird Al Yankovic.

**UPDATE BY CONOR**

Sure, it’s a promotional gimmick for a shoddy hits compilation, and embedding seems not to work, but it’s still awesome. You can make your own card dropping video here, here’s mine.

Has anyone told Bob? I doubt he remembers even doing it.

Weird Al’s song makes about as much sense as any of Dylan’s… :)

That’s because it’s a palindrome. No, that does not mean it’s a gigantic airship that looks like Michael Palin.

Am I the only person alive who thinks Bob Dylan is a grossly overrated, nonsensical hack?

You’re probably quite well versed in Blood on the Tracks and The Basement Tapes to have developed such an opinion. When was the last time you listened to “Buckets of Rain”?

I had forgotten just how absurd “Buckets of Rain” was until now. “I ain’t no monkey, but I know what I like.” Thanks, Conor. :)

Also parodied by Tim Robbins, in one of many Dylan references in the movie Bob Roberts

I have to say that I liked Weird Al’s version better than Bob’s version.

I don’t want to have the race talk… and perhaps I watch too much of the History Chanel… But if all these white guys you’ve shown us are the people Hitler wanted running things, I’m doubly glad he was stopped.
