Went to a big cat sanctuary this spring. Although a cool idea, in reality, ligers and tigons never stop growing (just like Glen Manning) and have an equally short life span because of it. One of the male species actually can breed one generation but its offspring are sterile, which kind of defeats the purpose. So what starts off as a cute little best of both worlds quickly becomes a gigantic monster that no one wants anymore. (just like Glen Manning.)

I have many cats in my life. I love cats. I can’t imagine why anybody would want or need to breed a kitty that huge! Cats like to play…that one could kill me with an accidental pat on the head! And the food bill terrifies me…

Good looking critter, but the thought of what it would take to maintain an animal like that in a comfortable way is awfully daunting.

Welcome to my field. I love animal genetics. You know, you can cross any two animals from the same family. For example, if you decided that crossing a raccoon with a red panda was a good idea, well, more power to ya. But you potentially could. It’s really fascinating stuff. I could go on forever about it.

So funny you should mention that. I was watching an MST3k actually ( the incredibly strange creatures who stopped living …) and for some reason went to wikipedia and looked up the movie, one thing led to another and I am on the liger webpage. There’s actually another animal called a tigon, a hybrid cross between a male tiger and a female lion. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tigon.

While they aren’t as large as Ligers, wolfdogs do have a few things going for them. First, they don’t cost nearly as much in food and vet bills. Second, you can actually take them with you to various places without causing people to panic. And third, they are legal in most states.

While I admit that a wolfdog doesn’t have the impressively large size that a liger does, they are at least legal in most states and don’t cost nearly as much in food, vet bills, etc.
