James Earl Jones Recites the Alphabet

June 2nd, 2008 by Conor Lastowka · 17 Comments

Back in the days before television devolved into the Love Cruise-taking, maggot-eating, Tanner-householding mess than it is now, families used to gather around the tube to watch wholesome entertainment such as James Earl Jones reciting the alphabet. Yes it’s true: James Earl Jones once was a young man. This clip comes from his three hour long 1967 special “James Earl Jones Recites Things” for which he pocketed a then unheard of sum of ten million dollars. I do have to say, they don’t call him James “One Take” Earl Jones for nothing. He nails it!

Man, the way he draws out the “fff” sound in “F” just a moment longer than one might expect… “Efffff”

    Brilliant.

Okay, just got to “T”. I’ve never seen someone protrude ALL their teeth for the letter T. The man’s got cojones, I’ll give him that.

He does have a soothing voice, I will give him that.

Somewhere around here I might still have an audio file of James Earl Jones saying “verisimilitude” and “Boutros Boutros-Ghali”.

I would love to meet him, but I’d be so starstruck that I’d ask him something dumb like, “OMG! Say ‘Luke, I am your father’!”

One helluva grill there, no doubt.

Something really had him bothered about M and N, though. Maybe he had a bad experience with M’s and N’s as a child or something.

Aww, it would have been cooler if he pronounced the letter Z as Zed.

I have expected him to follow up “I” with “am your father.” (the wink didn’t help, either)

  • 8 ShutterBun on Jun 2, 2008 at 8:35 pm

    Errr…half expected, that is.

Not quite as brilliant as James Earl Jones counting to 10.

I like when his voice breaks on ‘L’.

    “L?!”

This may sound weird, but I actually bought “James Earl Jones Reads the Bible” a while back. I do a lot of driving for my job, so I figured I’d go ahead and get some Bible study in every now and then. The title’s a bit deceptive, though. It’s only the New Testament. Somehow the voice of Darth Vader gives even the “begats” a certain oomph.

James Earl Jones originally read the Old Testament as well, but upon hearing it, God muttered something along the lines of “sheesh, I sound like a total wimp compared to him!” and the series was scrapped.

I had a dream where he sung to me “Ain’t no sunshine” and i’ve gotta say… the man can really dream sing!
