Best Dr. Seuss Character name

June 27th, 2008 by Conor Lastowka · 29 Comments

What is the best Dr. Seuss character name?  I’m far from an authority on the subject, but my vote would have to be for:

SYLVESTER McMONKEY McBEAN

sylvester mcmonkey mcbean

Yes, this huckster, who took The Sneetches for all they were worth has it all going for him.  A sweet ride to rival Marvin K Mooney’s Crunk Car, tons of dough, a hat a hipster would kill for, and his name is SYLVESTER McMONKEY McBEAN.  Let’s hope he has a stick of proper length to beat the ladies off with, (would his job as a fix-it-up-chappie deter the ladies?  Were you to ask they’d probably just roll over on their pile of cash and have the butler escort you out.)

Anyways, I’m sure I’ve overlooked someone in Seuss’ bibliography, so any other great characters names would be appreciated.

I recall an “OlivervoliverButt” that always cracked me up when I was into that sort of thing.

Little Sally Spingel Spungel Sporn is featured in a songbook. It also sounds vaguely dirty.

Huh, any chance he is related to Mr. Bean, perhaps.

Being serious, I have to say my favorite Dr. Suess characters would have to be the Grinch and his faithful dog, Max.

I was a huge Dr. Seuss fan when I was a kid and loved making my grandpa pronounce all the words. But I swear my favorite name was from this:

    Look what we found
    in the park
    in the dark;

    We will take him home;
    We will call him Clark.

    Now THAT’s funny.

what a great Seuss quote! I had never heard it before. it sums up all the wonderful strangeness of Seuss- it’s the tiniest bit unsavory, which makes it even more fun. thanks.

I’ve always dug The Lorax, and even moreso since the time our family went to Vegas, and that was what my 10 year-old nephew kept calling the Egypt-themed Casino.

Luke Luck from Fox in Socks.

    “Luke Luck likes lakes.
    Luke Luck licks lakes.”

Makes my son howl everytime we read it.

    Amanda,

Is it “Luke Luck” your lad likes, or is it Luke Luck’s lake-licking?

    Tom Brokaw Linguistic exercise?

Reply from Amanda on June 29, 2008:

He likes the fact that Luke and his duck lick lakes. Quite frankly, I like that fact, too. It’s just so absurd.

Going along with the same book (The Sneetches and Other Stories - one of my favorite 3 books as a kid) How about the plethora of names from “Too Many Daves”?

My personal favorite is Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate. I figure if I ever get famous enough, I could get away with naming my kid that. Couldn’t be any worse than Audio Science, could it?

    Moonunit?
    Dweezil
    other Zappas?

    or perhaps maybe Moxie Crimefighter

Zanzibar Buck-Buck McFate was killed when Fat Albert got confused and landed on top of him.

Kinda weird responding to my own message, but, isn’t that the rule nowadays (nowadays - what am I, 80?)? The more famous you become, at least in your own mind, the more bizarre your child’s name has to be to compensate?

Then again, maybe it’s something else. Nicholas Cage named his son Kal El. Was that really just his inner geek coming out, or was it maybe an attempt to draw attention away from his career?

    Some of my favorites:

    -Conrad Cornelius O’Donald O’Dell
    -Benjamin B Bicklebaum
    -Bartholomew Cubbins
    -Fredric Futzenfall
    -Mr. Sneelock

(I work at a library, and I find myself spending most of my time flipping through the children’s books - many Seuss books - that I’m supposed to be shelving)

O’Donald O’Dell, like, McMonkey McBean, has the double modifier that you only find in Dr. Seuss books. I like it.

I second the mention of Bartholemew Cubbins, the guy with the 500 hats.

“Theo LeSieg” and “Dr. Seuss.” Those are both great made up names! Both are favorites of mine. Both are great characters.

I was always a fan of Pontival Pott (spelling?) from one of the animated stories. I’m not sure if it was ever a book but Suess did all the writing for the animations so…I think it counts.

Pontival Pott and his magic piano!

Harris Tweed - v funny, combining not only rhyme but also fashion.

Weepy Weed - from the same rhyming couplet

and as a class, the Star-Bellied Sneetches

Miss O’Shmunsler (secretary in The Lorax)
