Me on the TeeVee

July 15th, 2008 by Bill Corbett · 32 Comments

If anyone lives in or around the Twin Cities, MN, area, I’ll be on the show “Twin Cities Live” today to talk about this past weekend’s release of MEET HELLBOY (AND BE QUICKLY, BRUTALLY CRUSHED BY HIM).

TCL header

Since it’s live, I will be showing up in cutoff jeans and a wife beater shirt, cradling a bottle of Wild Turkey, and — with furtive, paranoid glances — daring anyone to take it from me.

Couch-jumping may also occur.

UPDATE: Video below. Slightly less couch-jumping than I imagined, sorry. (And no, I didn’t forget the-guy-who- played-Tom Servo’s name. Ken Murgatroid is a dear friend and colleague.)

Somebody YouTube that sumbich! We’s all need to see Bill in his natural habitat.

  • 2 Michaela on Jul 15, 2008 at 8:22 am

Oh, please, please let there be couch-jumping!!

  • 3 Smuttynose on Jul 15, 2008 at 10:10 am

By “sumbich”, I mean the show, not Bill. I regret any confusion or distress this may have caused.

  • 4 justhesh on Jul 15, 2008 at 10:40 am

“Drivin’ down the road, lookin’ for a waffle house, drinkin’ lots of Wild Turkey!” (god I love Boggy Creek II)

I’m glad you’re taking things in stride. Look at it this way: You guys did your job wonderfully. It’s the studio that dropped the ball. (Seriously? Delaying it until Hancock, Hellboy, and Dark Knight come out? Wha?!)

Nice interview Bill and surprisingly candid for a local TV talk show.

I knew you lived in the metro area but didn’t realize you hail from that most prestigious of the first ring suburbs–Edina (where I also live and work)!

  • 6 justhesh on Jul 15, 2008 at 1:57 pm

Oh man. They showed a clip from Mitchell.

    My favorite part:

“He and I and the guy who played Tom Servo, the red puppet.”

Ahaha, did the Rifftrax recording studio just get a little chilly all of a sudden?! ; )

Hopefully Bill is using safety gear if doing said couch-jumping.

  • 8 Ryan on Jul 15, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Seriously, is this up on Youtube anywhere?

  • 9 Brian O. on Jul 15, 2008 at 2:31 pm

But no chair throwing? You changed man, you used to be cool.;)

  • 10 Danni on Jul 15, 2008 at 6:15 pm

You don’t need YouTube – click on Bill’s link of Twin Cities Live and go to Tuesday and you’ll see little thumbnails at the top – click on Bill’s picture and you can watch – it’s about 6 minutes.

  • 11 Danni on Jul 15, 2008 at 6:18 pm

Uh-oh – is Kevin going to get mad? New from Rifftrax – riffed by Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and “the guy who played Tom Servo, the little red puppet…”

  • 12 Shawn on Jul 15, 2008 at 9:26 pm

At 3:04, Bill gets the cutest deer-in-a-headlight look. It passes quickly, but still. I imagine being interviewed on TV news would do that.

  • 13 justhesh on Jul 15, 2008 at 10:27 pm

I have a feeling this will result in a street riff between Bill and “the guy”. Much blood will be spilled.

And then Mike can cash in those insurance policies he picked up recently.

They really sucked that one clip for all it was worth. And boy was it tasty.

  • 15 Kenny8 on Jul 16, 2008 at 1:27 am

Well that was something you don’t see very often on a entertainment segment, a candid, honest interview guest.

  • 16 Smuttynose on Jul 16, 2008 at 4:29 am

    Heavens to Murgatroid!

  • 17 Bill Corbett on Jul 16, 2008 at 7:31 am

    That’s a lie! I was never cool.

(Does it help at all that in my mind, I was throwing lots of chairs?)

  • 18 R.A. Roth on Jul 16, 2008 at 8:54 am

Did I hear the interview dude call it “Mystery Science 3000″, as in sans “Theater”? Totally uncool. If you can’t pronounce the longhand, skippy, stick to MST3K. If you have to ask what it means, it’s beyond you.

Somewhere, wherever he is, Bobby Knight thinks you’re alright Corbett.

  • 20 Marty (Gromit) on Jul 16, 2008 at 10:14 am

Yea, if you’re going to shorten it the proper way is what the other interviewer and Bill did, just leave off the 3000 part.

Great interview Bill! Nice burn on your fellow bot puppeteer…

  • 21 Smuttynose on Jul 16, 2008 at 10:37 am

Bill, I’m guessing one of the lines in the movie you wrote was “I’m a captain….. Captain of Crunch.”

  • 22 Ben on Jul 16, 2008 at 11:39 am

Are those balls of yarn on the table? The first thing Bill should have done was look at the hosts blankly and say “Uh, I was told there would be beer?”

  • 23 Ryan on Jul 16, 2008 at 4:38 pm

Are we going to get a more detailed evaluation of all of this? Bill asked us if we wanted it, and I certainly would be interested.
Bill, was it envisioned as an Eddie Murphy vehicle from the get go?

  • 24 Bill Corbett on Jul 16, 2008 at 8:33 pm

Ryan, gotta think about this. Not sure there’s enough interest, and also not sure I wanna get into much more about it at this point.

To answer your Q, though: no, wasn’t created with Eddie Murphy in mind. Written, rewritten, and bought by Paramount well before he was attached.

  • 25 seanf on Jul 17, 2008 at 8:23 am

It would have worked much better as originally envisioned– Joe Don Baker’s big comeback. And you have to admit– Starship Joe Done has a much better ring.

One thing I wonder about. For a movie like this, they say “screenwriters Bill & Rob” — but then there are all the other guys that are brought in to “fix” things.

I think those other guys should also get credit. Do it on a per-scene basis. “You know that joke which fell flat 14 minutes into the movie? That was written by Alfred X. Remember his name, “Alfred X”, for the next time you need a screen writer to fix up someone else’s movie script…”

  • 27 Nanobots on Jul 17, 2008 at 10:30 am

    “Spaceship C Hamilton Thunderpenis”

that would have gotten more attention!

  • 28 Wes on Jul 18, 2008 at 6:21 am

Plenty of interest here in any and all thoughts on your movie Bill. Of course the Rifftrax/commentary format could work fine for that. I think if the studio had clue one they’d hire you three to put the commentary on the DVDs, maybe even with the silhouettes-as-subtitle-track like they did for the original Ghostbusters DVD (in an homage/blatant rip off of MST). For some reason, seeing the heads of the people talking is better, I guess just like it’s better to have the character w/ dialog on-screen.

I just can’t help it, but whenever I hear Bill’s voice I just see Crow T. Robot in my mind.

P.S. Love to know what was written by Bill and what wasn’t.

  • 31 unityofeffect on Jul 21, 2008 at 2:07 pm

Thanks for posting the video Bill. I was just paging down through the posts and noticed it.

  • 32 James on Jul 23, 2008 at 7:37 pm

    Wheeling West Virginia? Really? Whoa.

You must have seen Meet Dave in St. Clairsville. I’m guessing. It’s the closest theater.

Damn. I almost had a random Crow encounter.
