A Man… Called… DUMBLEDORE!

August 8th, 2008 by Mike Nelson · 18 Comments

A confession: from a very young age, I have been fascinated by drunken British actors. I have read no less than three biographies of Richard Burton. I have seen “The Dresser” more than twenty times. I own Peter O’Toole’s autobiography in hardcover (Loitering With Intent: The Child). And more than anything, I have striven in every way to model every aspect of my life, no matter how seemingly insignificant, on that of Oliver Reed. (I am drunk and beating up a waiter as I write this.) And I know he’s Irish, but I include in my list the late great Richard Harris. Here he is charming the audience on a UK chat show just like a true Irish man.

The upshot being that it was a bittersweet delight to give him the business in the second installment of the Harry Potter series. We laughed a lot during this production, which I see as a good sign.

the above is a clip of Dave Thomas of SCTV as Richard Harris performing the very long ‘MacArthur Park’ on Mel’s Rock Pile. takes me back to the days when TV was psychedelic as a matter of course.
SCTV also did a great parody of the great British actors who starred it the Lion In Winter/Camelot genre. in ‘The Man Who Would Be King of the Popes,’ the late John Candy portrays ‘Richard Berton,’ Joe Flaherty is ‘Peter O’Tule’, and Dave Thomas is ‘Richard Harriss.’ each attempts to out-act each other in an orgy of well-formed lines and grand gestures. a funny take on some great men. where is their like, these days?

It shows in the final product, I think. The best Rifftrax always are the ones where you guys seem to be cracking each other up.

Harry Potter II: Electric Bugaloo pretty good.

“We laughed a lot during this production, which I see as a good sign.”

Whatever happened to the idea of getting a “poopie” reel of Rifftrax flubs?

So you mention Burton, O’Toole, and Reed, but what about David Warner?? Best decapitation ever filmed… check. The ultimate evil… check. Got to punch Leonardo DiCaprio in the stomache… check. In lots of Sam Peckinpah movies, but never killed once…. we have a winner!

    Christ, Harris…
As a native born Irish speaker, and supporter of Gaelic Irish culture, I…sort of disown Harris. But I don’t have the authority to disown him from Ireland’s society.

When will people learn that large amounts of alcohol in a person’s system only enhances their abilities. We Irish have known this for ages, heck it makes us smarter & more fun to be around :D

Wow, never killed once, huh. You would have to be really smart or flat drunk on your back to avoid being killed in a Peckinpah movie.

Don’t forget his dual starring role in “The Quest of the Delta Knights.” My favorite David Warner film is “Morgan: A Suitable Case for Treatment” released in 1966. I saw it many years ago, but it is a great movie. I distinctly recall him wearing a gorilla costume, and running amok at a posh gathering; something I’ve dreamt of doing for years. He is again partially clad in black fake fur in “Delta Knights” as Vultare, poor fellow.
