A new butcher shop has opened in La Jolla and it carries Wild Boar Bacon! Homegrown Meats is the new go to place for grass fed beef raised near San Diego but it’s the Wild Boar Bacon that is flying off the shelves, selling three times more than the regular bacon, according to the butcher. Even at the high end shops, there’s no stopping peoples desire to eat novelty bacon! We picked some up this weekend:
The uncooked product was difficult to distinguish form regular bacon, though a bit smaller of a cut. After frying it up, however, there was a distinct difference. It retained alot of its body and chewiness after cooking, instead of getting shrivelled and crispy like some bacon can, and had a unique flavor to it, very meaty and hearty. It may not be an everyday “go to” bacon, but it makes a great ingredient on sandwiches and would go well in a soup.
Hopefully with the smashing success of Wild Boar Bacon, we’ll see some more novel takes on the American classic. I will be the first in line for Warthog Bacon.
