Keanu Regional Final

Whoa!  The second of our four regional finals in the Most Awesome State Quarter contest is underway!

According to the US Mint website, the unapproved alternatives for the Alaska State Quarter were: A picture of a Polar Bear with the inscription “Land of the Midnight Sun”, ”Dog Musher with Denali (Mt. McKinley),” featuring a dog musher, Denali, and the Big Dipper; and “Gold Panner with Denali,” depicting a (presumably) grizzled old prospector with Denali in the background.  The only better bench I’ve ever heard of would be the 1992 Dream Team, where you had Hall of Famers like John Stockton, Clyde Drexler and David Robinson backing up Jordan and Magic.  (Also, Christian Laettner, aka The Ohio State Quarter of the Dream Team was there.)  New Jersey, though iconic, heroic and Crossroads related, gets Timothy Treadwell-ed by the gigantic bear waiting for them on the other side of the Delaware.

Winner:  Alaska.  New Jersey gets in a good shot or two, but Alaska moves on

so will there be a “non-state” quarter match up for 2009?
I’d like to see how Guam would take on Puerto Rico or D.C.

Well, well.. Alaska in the Final Four. Not exactly an upset there. But those boys from New Jersey really gave that bear a few shots.

(I love that link… Thanks Conor! What is it about repeated loop of a kick to the groin to a man in a bear suit while Desperado plays is soo damn funny?)

This was actually provided by Kevin back in April:

For Alaska to be accurate, the polar bear needs to be swimming for food in the Arctic Ocean with no land in sight. New Jersey needs to have some landfills, clouds of pollution and a shallow grave (a tip of the hat to “The Sopranos”).

I’m happy to see that Alaska made it into the finals. Though it pretty much had to get in, otherwise there would have been riots in the streets. :-P

Since this is the Keanu Regional Finals, Shouldn’t that quarter be made out of wood, see how his head is also made out of wood?

Go Alaska. Even though the griz was really my 3rd choice. I wanted the polar bear or the dog sled to win, but at least it wasn’t the gold panner. What a lame quarter.
