My Pal Russ

December 5th, 2008 by Mike Nelson · 18 Comments

Back about the time that Ricky Gervais was fronting Seona Dancing, I was in a band called Buc Blaster and the Ukulele Rangers fronted by my college friend Russ Rogers. We wrote a good many songs together, a few of them actually good! Russ is in fine form here:

Did he use that giant Crayon to paint that picture?

  • 2 awfulgoodmovies on Dec 5, 2008 at 12:01 pm

Holy crap!? …I just realized Mike probably painted the picture and gave it to Russ…..and I just said it looked like a crayola painting! * can a mod please delete my posts* Thanks!

Ha Ha! awfulgoodmovies couldn’t help riffing, and now he’s in the doghouse with Mike!

By the way, Nelson, your painting’s for absolute crap!

What? He *did* paint it? Oh, look at the vibrancy of colour that I didn’t notice a moment ago. It doesn’t look like a hobo’s gin and urine soaked schmatta *at all*!
    No sir, not at all!

    *****Mike look here!!!****

Ignore that idiot poster above! He doesn’t know what he’s talking about!

Russ is very talented and that painting rocks!

    You are awesome!

Mike, I recently touted my connection to you and “The Ukulele Rangers” over at Quick Stop Entertainment. Y’see, I’m currently taking part in the Holiday Edition of Masters of Song Fu! I have to admit that I was a tad bit disappointed to see that the RiffTones and Jonathan Coulton would not be competing this round. But, Masters Paul and Storm are in the competition as well as Finalist Journeymen Jason Morris and Jeff MacDougall! I’m excited.

The Painting is actually from IKEA and was discounted to just $125. It fit better behind the couch turned on it’s side, which is why the signature in the lower left corner is vertical. It’s actually a giant sheet of plastic cling wrap, craftily manufactured to look like canvas.

I’m glad you like the song. Your mention and embed has already boosted my VIEWS by more than 50. Not bad, considering it took a month to get 400! It’s all part of my plan to turn myself into an Internet Meme and YouTube Phenom! Thanks for helping me go viral. Rock on, Russ

*Whew* Thanks for getting me off the hook with Mike!………..Unless of course he moonlights at IKEA??!

    Keep up the good work!

I did not know IKEA was selling cheap abstract art?

That’s the ONLY thing IKEA sells. It’s just that you can sit on some of the art. Maybe that makes the art less abstract. It’s still pretty inexpensive!

And $125 is cheap for art, but kind of expensive for just a giant piece of cling wrap and a frame!

I direct you to the other Song Fu Master, Jonathan Coulton’s song, “IKEA”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KTJEtMSuMqg

No offense Mike, but Russ’s singing was pretty bad, especially at the last part where he sounded like a monkey:

    “I’ll be a star on You-who-who-AH-HE-HE-HE-HE-HA-HO-HO-HE-HA-HA-HO-HO-HO-HE!”

  • 11 Nick Fechter on Dec 5, 2008 at 3:41 pm

And no offense to Russ of-course, your probably a great guy :D

I remember well Brash Daring from Buc Blaster and the Ukulele Rangers preforming such classics as ” Let’s Go to Reno” and “The Foam Rubber Song” in the student center at UW-River Falls.

Nah. Didn’t you see what Mike said? I was the front-man for “Buc Blaster and the Ukulele Rangers.” The front-man of any Rock Band is almost always a total egomaniacal douche bag. However bad my singing is, I’m probably a far worse human being. Unless talent and personality are inversely proportional, then I guess I’m still a great guy.

Folk music for the postmodern post-20th century people. Nice/funny tune, and he seems like a nice guy. I give him a 5.
Was your band name inspired by Buckaroo Banzai?
How about this for an 80’s band name: “Legwarmer Zima and the Triangular Eyebrows. ” Tiny pink shorts must be worn at all times onstage, and asymmetrical bangs are required.

Wow, the utter modesty of your response has succeeded in making me feel like a total ass-hole.

    DAMN YOU REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY!!!!

The name, “Buc Blaster,” came from a very old baseball card, featuring Pittsburgh Pirates homerun hitters, “The Buc Blasters.” “The Ukulele Rangers” part is entirely fictional and ironic, nobody in the band owned or played the Ukulele.

Every band member went by a stage name, kind of like the Ramones or Riders in the Sky. I was “Buc Blaster.” There was Dirk Riprock, Smokin’ Joe Lassiter, Sergeant Slappy, Al “The Fishin’ Musician” Linder and Chief Hole-in-the-Day. Michael J. Nelson happened to be “Brash Daring”! I can’t remember where Mike got that name.

The Ukulele Rangers never made an official recording. And to my knowledge there are only a handful of highly valuable bootleg cassettes in this world. I would love a copy of one of them.

Micheal J. Nelson is a bona fide Song Fu Master and a master of song parody as well! I’m proud to claim that these nascent skills were nurture and honed during his tenure as a Ukulele Ranger.
