If James Taylor Were on Fire

December 30th, 2008 by Bill Corbett · 11 Comments

Confession: my wife and I once went to see James Taylor at the Hollywood Bowl. We were sitting pretty far back, so between that and JT’s legendary mellowness, we’re not sure if he ever even showed up.

Could we have detected JT’s presence better if he were on fire? Paul and Storm have finally tackled that age-old question with an amazingly accurate Taylor impression, and the answer appears to be: probably not.

Bonnie Rose, winner of Steven Stephen Colbert’s Green Screen Challenge, provides the animation:

Frankly, I probably would not be able to tell if he was on fire or not….He is always so mellow sounding…It would be hard to tell that just by listening to him.

Who is this ‘Steven’ Colbert? Is that Stephen’s long lost brother?

    (Force of habit, ‘pologize.)

Oops! I should know better, since my brother has the same first name — also spelled with the Olde English-style “ph.”

    Thanks. Correctified.

Don’t know why, but this put me in mind of the bit from The Lion in Winter:
“None of you gives a damn about me! You wouldn’t piss on me if I was on fire!”
    “Let’s strike a flint and find out”….

Hmm, now what does this remind me of?….

    (dissolves into an incoherent flashback)

    Truckers….invisibility watches…..Ben Murphy….”I like my butt!”

I never associated mellowness with fire… mellowness is more… syrupy.

James Taylor was the fellow that first blighted my ears with the “F word”… on a live album tape. Boy were my parents surprised.

I’m a bone fide James Taylor fan and that was freakin’ high-larious!

He looks like a Klingon folk singer doing a cover of a James Taylor number while on fire.

Being Klingon, he’d probably regard being set ablaze as a compliment.

Your brother changed his last name to Colbert?

    Seems a little drastic.

Really? This reminds me more of American Idol—

Simon Cowell: “Franky, I lost interest after the flames consumed your guitar pick.”
