I just don’t know

February 5th, 2009 by Mike Nelson · 52 Comments

Hmmm...?Cool, hip, sexy? Or deeply, deeply unmanning? Like, gelding-level unmanning? Like, at least if he were wearing a tutu you’d know it was a joke-level unmanning? Like, he probably straps on those disgusting fake breasts so he can “nurse” the baby and he actually tells people about it-level unmanning?

I can’t decide. Please discuss.

I think we’re missing the point here–is that baby throwing up gang signs?

  • 2 randommanthefirst on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:42 am

Unmanning or not, the scarf sure isn’t helping things.

  • 3 Ariel on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:45 am

That man is one smart man- he’s going to try to pick up chicks, and he will succeed because he’s just raised his desirability factor. Man + Baby(and both are attractive)=super sexy.
He’s putting off “Sleep with me for I have good genes and fathering skills” and its working. I would totally fall for it.

  • 4 Catfish on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:48 am

Until they develop a way to carry a baby in a pouch on a stick like a hobo, we’re screwed.

  • 5 Sampo on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:55 am

Depends. If he’s constantly “coochie-cooing” to it: pretty femmy.
If he’s slamming, front-first, into lampposts: manly.

  • 6 Alex on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:57 am

Or the hair. Or the strange tension in the mouth.

As for what we’re actually talking about, an actual father doesn’t give a crap how it looks as long as it works correctly. , i.e. it keeps the kid where you can see him, out of harm’s way, and preferably happy and quiet. Though it helps that it isn’t pink.

  • 7 Houndstooth Mind on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:57 am

I’m with Ariel. A man in a Snugli is hotter than any oily-bodied, banana-hammocked Chippendale model on any calendar anywhere.

  • 8 Ariel on Feb 5, 2009 at 11:58 am

That ensemble will get him laid :)

  • 9 Adam on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:02 pm

I think the baby’s doing him a service, actually; near as I can tell, it’s the least douchebaggy thing about him.

  • 10 t.a.m.s.y. on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:05 pm

Where can I buy one of these? How much for just the baby?

  • 11 Ariel on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:08 pm

Rent or borrow- they are too expensive to buy.

  • 12 Onil on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:08 pm

A real man would carry 20 lbs of bacon in that thing.

  • 13 OxfordProle on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:14 pm

I don’t know. I find men using adorable, baby-filled Snuglies as devices to pick up women somewhat creepy and unwholesome.

That said, this guy’s emo haircut would have caused me to reject him out of hand, so I suppose I’m not the best judge.

  • 14 OxfordProle on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:15 pm

    Nice catch. :)

  • 15 Yanni on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:16 pm

I don’t know what’s so unmanning about it; people use human-shields all the time…

  • 16 Scott on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:39 pm

Maybe he was demonstrating something that we didn’t see – “look, I squeeze the foot and he throws up on the cellphone yakker in front of me at Starbucks!” That’s pretty manly, and it’s legal.

Naw, he doesn’t look like the type to do that. You don’t really have the face to pull it off either, Mike. Can you imagine Gary Busey wearing one of these? Can you imagine the disemboweled remains of the person who tries to put one of these things onto Gary Busey?

  • 17 zack on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:40 pm

Used to use one of these things with my little girl… I put her in it recently just to see if she’d like it (she’s now almost 3 and has outgrown its use).

There was a lot of screaming as I was quickly getting her out of it.

I don’t think she understood she was supposed to be my chick magnet. Sigh.

  • 18 Thud on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:43 pm

It’s not the baby that is “gelding-level unmanning.” It *is* the scarf. And the hair.

Some stubble, a beer bottle, and no frickin’ scarf and he’d be plenty masculine.

  • 19 Ninjew on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:45 pm

I’d rather be a babe magnet. Not a baby magnet.

  • 20 Rob III on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:46 pm

That guy would make for a good man-baby.

  • 22 Ariel on Feb 5, 2009 at 12:53 pm

I like his haircut, I must admit- he looks European so that only adds to the attractiveness.

  • 23 smallerdemon on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Gotta agree here. It’s the hair and scarf combo that’s demanning this fellow, not the baby.

  • 24 smallerdemon on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:03 pm

We use one. I like to think of myself as a giant mech that my kiddo controls by holding on to my fingers.

I also tell people that she’s a baby Sontaran: http://img.skitch.com/20090205-dteq88qkx6sjgdb4hk13im77b5.jpg

Sadly, only nerds get that one.

  • 25 smallerdemon on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:06 pm

That’s called a “bindle” and here is the fashionable… looks like Torgo to me, modeling a hobo’s bindle.

  • 26 Scarlett on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:16 pm

It’s the scarf and the hair: a painful and lingering reminder of the metrosexual trend that, thanks to South Park, we now know was the creation of Crab People.

I would say that instead of the baby and baby carrier taking away the Man Card for the guy, it’s the guy who trying to cash in on whatever Man Card the baby has/would have in the future.

  • 27 Chris Hughes on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:27 pm

But what sort of vibe would you pick up from an oily-bodied, banana-hammocked Chippendale model wearing a Snugli? It would seem like someone just sort of draped it on him before he could object: “I’m gonna head into Babies-R-Us and pick up some diapers. Could you keep an eye on Clayton for me?”

  • 28 Avdi on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:35 pm

As a father with a new baby, I can concur with another commenter that if it keeps the baby happy and out of trouble I don’t care if it has “FAIRIE PRINCESS” written in big glittery letters across the front. And I can add that any unmanning effect is more than cancelled out by the hordes of women drawn like moths to a bug-lite because OMG HE’S CARRYING PROOF OF FERTILITY.

I, too, am far more concerned by this guy’s apparent obliviousness to the fact that a gray woolen constrictor is apparently trying to choke the life out of him.

  • 29 Chris Hughes on Feb 5, 2009 at 1:39 pm

There’s no way a man designed this. Hester Prynne’s A has become U for Unavailable.

  • 30 Lyndsey on Feb 5, 2009 at 2:14 pm

I think it’s freaking cute. My husband strapped our baby onto him at Disneyland last year in a Baby Bjorn.

    As for the name….THAT”S unmanning.

  • 31 Remmie Barrow on Feb 5, 2009 at 2:46 pm

Definitely one level above Man+Dog in the desirability factor.

  • 32 Kim on Feb 5, 2009 at 3:11 pm

After a quick survey of people in my vicinity my brother and a friend say so manly and super chick magnet.

My mom says fatherhood=manly, scarf and haircut=very unmanly

My dad said he wouldn’t be caught dead with one of those things, thats what arms are for, carrying kids.

  • 33 Michael Crawford on Feb 5, 2009 at 3:22 pm

I dunno Mike, for starters I don’t think the wig is working for you…

  • 34 Brooke on Feb 5, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I much prefer the man+dog combo. At no time would i have to wipe the dogs hinder. Or fend off a crazy ex… Or find out he swiped the kid from the local school yard to hit on overly maternal women with codependant tendancies. All situations would leave me a bit uncomfortable.

  • 35 Greg on Feb 5, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Dude looks like that, he doesn’t eat bacon. Definitely unmanly.

  • 36 Houndstooth Mind on Feb 5, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Put a vacuum in one hand and a feather duster in the other and you’ll be looking at the future Mr Houndstooth!

  • 37 Laura on Feb 5, 2009 at 6:09 pm

The ADORABLE baby makes up for this mans taste. He is clearly metro. The scarf would fit if he were in London, but no, not in that picture. Grab a leather jacket, a white t-shirt and a beer and we got a manly man-father. Oh, but the hair…. He can’t work the mane. Not at all. Get a buzz cut and grow a goatee.

  • 38 Laura on Feb 5, 2009 at 6:12 pm

I can’t stop looking at that baby, it’s so cute….

  • 39 Queen Shadowrama on Feb 5, 2009 at 6:14 pm

I gotta agree with Brooke on the Man+ Dog combo. That’ll work, no problem. The Man+Baby combo just makes me run the other way.

  • 40 randommanthefirst on Feb 5, 2009 at 7:34 pm

Why are men + babies so appealing to women? Doesn’t this baby have a mother? I know the movie Junior would have us thinking otherwise, but I’m pretty sure that he didn’t give birth to the thing (unless he’s from Oregon.)

  • 41 randommanthefirst on Feb 5, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Oh Lord, I’m going to be waking up screaming to that for a while.

  • 42 AJ on Feb 6, 2009 at 12:57 am

Ohhhh, man that’s kinda sick! :D LOL

  • 43 Queen Shadowrama on Feb 6, 2009 at 4:53 am

Yeah, no idea why that works with some women. When I see it, I can hear the guy’s voice in my head saying either, “You’re going to have to share me with another woman for the rest of your life” or “I’m deeply irresponsible and don’t wrap up my junk.”

Hence, my running away as fast as I can. :-P

  • 44 Some random guy on Feb 6, 2009 at 7:42 am

Remember, no chest bumping while wearing this apparatus.

  • 45 Skip Mendler on Feb 6, 2009 at 11:00 am

It’s only unmanning if the kid grows a bit taller and then develops a propensity for back-kicking.

  • 46 jfe on Feb 7, 2009 at 4:05 pm

Mr. Nelson, would you be able to decide if he were munching on some bacon?

  • 47 Ann Peek on Feb 7, 2009 at 4:43 pm

The baby carrier’s fine. The scarf…unmanning

  • 48 Alderaan on Feb 9, 2009 at 3:37 am

Look at those eyes, and that little smile! ADORABLE!

Wait, are you people saying there’s a baby in the picture? I’m not seeing it.
